Emergency Luminaires in Buildings

In most commercial buildings emergency luminaires are a legal requirement. However, they are not exclusive to business premises and there are other buildings where emergency lighting must be installed. Where they are installed, the main objective of the lights will be to provide sufficient illumination for the occupants to escape. If it is preferred, they will switch on automatically at any time there is electrical power failure. Emergency luminaires are there to assist in the event of a fire and will also help during power cuts and similar emergencies.

Types of Emergency Luminaires

There are various emergency luminaires and each one has been carefully designed. They have individual features that have been fashioned to fulfil the requirements of the installer. Every application has it own special needs and this collection should provide for every eventuality. There are bulkheads, exit sign boxes, hanging blades and twin halogen spots. The luminaires can be positioned on walls and ceilings, where they will direct staff and members of the public to safety.

Testing and Servicing Emergency Luminaires

Emergency luminaires have integral battery packs that will usually sustain light output for three hours after mains electrical failure. Batteries have to be tested regularly, so it is necessary to simulate mains failure to assess their performance. Battery discharge tests are usually carried out at the weekend or at other times when the premises are closed. The emergency lighting circuit must have all the facilities for a test to be carried out and the results should be registered in a log. Regular testing and servicing is an essential process to ensure the emergency luminaires remain in full working order.
